Windows 11 *Optional* Update: What you should wait
Microsoft has just announced an option for people to trial new features before their general release in Windows 11.
This isn’t about fixes to security flaws–everyone gets those at the same time.
This is an opportunity for businesses to jump the queue to receive new features and updates first.
Sounds exciting, no?
Not quite.
What’s our advice?
Patience, young grasshopper, patience is a virtue!
While it may be tempting to give into the tantalizing prospect of new features–and nobody ever likes to wait–there are risks that come with jumping aboard any trial phase. What are they?
Bugs
According to Microsoft, Windows has mitigated/resolved 5 known issues with the Windows 11 update. These have come in the form of the Start menu, Windows Search, and UWP apps not opening; third-party UI customization apps possibly causing Windows not to start up; and compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers (and Windows 11). Though these bugs have been addressed, trying to work through these issues while operating a business can impede progress.
Errors
Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed 3 known errors with the Windows 11 update. They are receiving an error with apphelp.dll from apps using DirectX, receiving a 0x800f0922 error when trying to install KB5012170, and receiving an error “0xaac (2732)” when domain join processes fail.
Good things come to those who…
Both of these issues could have significant impact on your operations, potentially causing chaos in your daily workflow.
Waiting until features have completed a thorough trial process gives you the advantage of other people’s experiences. They’ve already dealt with the complexities, so, by the time you get the new features, they’ll be polished and dependable. And that’s what’s important for the smooth running of your business.
Trust us, the safe road is the smart road, especially when your business systems are involved. The benefits of being an early adopter may seem enticing, but you don’t want to end up being the guinea pig.
Remember the old adage: good things come to those who wait!
We’re all for keeping up-to-date with the latest technology and software trends and updates, but there is a time to exercise caution: don’t be tempted by the “shiny” new features.
- Be patient.
- Stay safe.
- Ensure that, when the time comes for the actual, fully functioning update, you’re getting something that’s proven to work.
